Tell us about your favorite way to get lost in a simple activity — running, chopping vegetables, folding laundry, whatever. What’s it like when you’re in “the zone”?
My sport is weightlifting. I love it. It is me. And when I am doing it, I am it. When someone asked me what it was like, all I could think was “It’s like swinging a broadsword“. I honestly don’t know why I think that. I never swung a broadsword. At least in this lifetime.
The Zone is a feeling of peace and oneness. The weight, the gym and my soul are at one. You exist only in this moment and this time doing exactly what you are doing. You are your breath and your breath is you. There is no other way to describe it. The world doesn’t fall away but it simply merges with you. It is timeless.
I’ve never had this with any other sport nor have I had the Zone feeling with any other sport. It’s always been mine. I have been fascinated with it since I was in grade school and saw the weight lifters on Venice Beach in the movies.
I belong to the Brooklyn Public Library [50 bucks and all the books you can read for an entire year no matter where you are in the USA!] and currently I’m recommending they purchase some digital ebooks on weight lifting. It isn’t for everyone but everyone needs to find the sport/exercise that makes their soul sing. Exercise is not work. It should never be work. If it is, you haven’t found the right one. My Zone is not your Zone but if you find the right exercise/sport for you, you’ll find your Zone and your health.
