Sure you can in this day and age, discuss Religion and Politics with strangers . And what you get is a high probability of: ὁλόκαυστος. Once upon a time, we may have disagreed but at no time would a rational human being suddenly turn into a screaming raving lunatic who sadly can no longer be committed for treatment.
Why? Because they have a right to be screaming raving lunatics no matter if you would consider them Polite Company or not. What I think of what we have done to our mentally ill population in the name of assimilation is a whole new topic. [I lost 15 patients I cared for to Suicide when they closed one of our state hospitals. I guess the do-gooders never assumed that the patients would view losing the state hospital as losing their security and kill themselves in various ways. I hold every last one of them responsible for those patients who walked in front of trains, jumped from bridges and in one case killed a police officer who fired his entire load of bullets into him while the man stabbed him to death, leaving the officer’s pregnant wife and 2 or 3 year old son.] Yes, the system needed to be changed but you didn’t need to dump them like so much unwanted garbage to wander the streets. And our killer needed to be NEVER let out. We knew that when we had him on our unit. He was HIV positive. He would cut himself open and tell us to come get him because he wanted us to have HIV too. We knew he wanted to die and he wanted to take someone with him. He told us repeatedly. Those assholes who thought they were doing good gave the state the justification they needed to dump these people without providing a secure transition that could have prevented it. May they all rot in hell for the helpless lives that they destroyed. None of them deserved what they got from those who claimed to care. But that bitterness is for another post.
Once upon a time we knew how to interact with others. It may not have been perfect but it was a damn sight different than today’s world where, if you want to see the lunatics, all you have to do is sign on to Facebook and read the comments. We are bolder, we are ruder, we are brasher, we are lunatics. I was reading a book by Bertrand Russell for my Religious Studies Class. It is called “Why I am not a Christian.” I made the mistake of reading it in public. God help me. Talk about angry defensive fear ridden people. I call them the Amen Pew. Sort of like rabid dogs of the Inquisition but 2000 style. To read it was to commit a grievous error. That book should be burned was the general attitude. Hitler would have loved these people. They would have been right behind him carrying the banners.
When one suppresses ideas and freedom of thought by any censored means, this is what you get. And it seems to be popular while people scream at each other as rabid as any staunch brown-shirt. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. You know Hitler also changed the history books, much like a certain state is trying to do. When the Intelligentsia becomes afraid, you need to start to worry. And yes, they are afraid.
We can no longer discuss politics and religion with strangers, friends and family unless we are prepared for a fight and an argument. I realized the other day, I miss intelligent conversation where ideas are bounced around and no one needs Thorazine. I don’t care what the hell the Game of Thrones is doing. I don’t care who Big Brother kicked out of the house. I don’t care what the drunk down the street is doing unless the drunk down the street wants to get sober then I care. I just want a bloody intelligent conversation about ideas with someone reasonably intelligent who doesn’t feel they have to “Save my Soul”. Seriously. I’m tired. I’m tired the fights and the arguments. When you have to worry about opening your mouth and making a simple statement? We are well on the way to imitating Germany in 1938.
So no, you cannot discuss them in polite company or any company for that matter or the rabid fearful brown-shirts will be on you in a heart beat defending their “Rights” never mind about your own. I had a full right to sit there and read that book. What part of that didn’t the intrusive idiots understand?
Damn, I miss smart people. It’s too damn bad we are all hiding or not talking because we might get our head bit off.
