Life and choices…. It’s always a crap shoot unless you hear Your Self

Hello, Goldilocks!

Write about a time you had a Goldilocks experience, exploring different choices and finally arriving at “just right.”

Seriously, there are times when I think whoever does these questions has had one too many tokes and sees white rabbits running past screaming “I’m late. I’m late for a very important date. No time to say hello, goodbye, I’m late I’m late I’m late.”

Luck is when preparation and opportunity meet.  In life, no matter what you try, it’s exploring different choices because we change.  If we don’t, we have a serious problem.  The main purpose of life is change and growth.  We won’t be who we were at 17 at 92.

I use to believe the human race would tend toward good.  Got that knocked right out of me.  Now I am firmly convinced the human race will do what benefit them the rest be damned.  There are some who won’t.  They are a bit higher evolved but Good God… all you have to do is look at Congress and the fact we reelect these fools as proof of what I say.    Someone said, “wouldn’t you love to be 18 again?”   Hell NO.  Not in this day and time.  If you let me pick my century and year, yes.  I would but not in the 2000s.   It’s a bunch of screaming loons who can’t understand why when they keep doing the same shit day after day they get the same results.  Like electing what they elect to congress and putting up with the shit that it does.   As my favorite quotes go:

Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve.  George Bernard Shaw
(1856 – 1950)

Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.  HL Mencken (1880 – 1956)
Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule – and both commonly succeed, and are right.
HL Mencken (1880 – 1956)

It’s a far cry from the starry-eyed shit I believed when I went in the USN.

The only time I’ve run into what they are talking about in the Goldilocks quote is when I cook.  I don’t follow recipes.  I tend to do riffs on those recipes.  I experiment, I change, I develop them.   If I am halfway smart, I write it down.  If  I am not, I’m left going “Oh Shit”  when the other half asked for it again.   For example.  I took Top Secret Recipes version of Red Lobster Stuffed Mushrooms and the Red Lobster version they put on the their site and created my version.  I took them to Christmas at the kid’s house.   She fell in love with them.  She asked and I told her they were Red Lobster stuffed mushrooms.  So she ordered them the next time she was at Red Lobster.  Whoops.  “They weren’t as good as yours.  I was so disappointed.”  Um.  I forgot to tell her I did it.  The same with the Horseradish Grill Mac and cheese.  I added my own items and changed the cheeses and it is in high demand at reunions, parties and other events.   The kid made it for her work Christmas party and it vanished.  She had no leftovers.    In cooking, you can have Goldilocks moments.  In life, you can’t.   You can have luck as I defined it.

You can have that moment when you find a way of doing something.  I do things my way much to my mother’s disgust who thought the only right way was her way.  If you didn’t do it her way, she redid it.  But her way didn’t work for me and personally I believe in working smarter not harder.   She passed this on to my half-sister who is neurotic about everything.  She could barely make it up the steps so I took the laundry she hung on hangers from her and carried it up the steps for her.  I asked her were she wanted it hung.  She wouldn’t let me because I might hang it up wrong.  Honey, if I have an advanced stage 4 cancer, you can bet your toots I am letting anyone who wants to hang shit up for me hang it up where they want.   I do things my way.  It might take some experimenting to find that way but I’ll find it.

As to other paths in life?  No.  I knew what was in my blood.  It was police, farming or military.  It’s strong and it is undeniable urges.   And it turns out I am damn good at psych.  I lucked into Forensic psych.  There are things I love.  History.  Driving.  Riding horseback.  Lifting weights.  They are part of me.  There never was any question.  And I gather political science.  I walk through political science classes with As and not even trying.  I really should get  a degree in that.   They all show me where I could have been and been happy.  There was no trying it out.  It sang in my blood.

Have I tried stuff out?  Yeah.  Yoga.  My chiropractor yelled at me and told me never to do that again.  It appears I am too flexible and really did a number on my back and neck.  It took him 4 months to get it back to normal.

There appears to be sort of glamour with certain things that make us thing we would like it.  That should be a clue.  If it isn’t singing in your blood?  It isn’t going to be a good fit.  The glamour is fairy magic that fades as soon as you try something.  That’s when you have the Goldilocks Experiences.

If you don’t hear something singing in your blood?  You need to stop and actually listen to Your Self.  Put down that damn phone, turn off the mindless babbling of the TV, Radio or Ipod and hear what you have to say.

  1. That still small voice doesn’t try to compete with anything. If you fill your life up with junk, it lets you. If you stop and are silent long enough to hear it, that voice shows you the way. The feeling is just right. No trying anything out. What you do is right and you feel it in your bones. And you and your still small voice are happy. It’s what most call Zen. Few bother with it today and it shows.
